Ford’s Executive VP, Mark Fields was interviewed on CNN and was asked to comment on his two US-based rivals and the big story involving their bailouts by the US Government. He just kept talking about their plans, their new products and how they are not in need of government assistance.
Essentially he had nothing to say about the GM CEO getting the axe, nor Chrysler’s scant 30 day window. He also was fairly tight lipped about the fact that his rivals are getting cash loans while Ford is going it alone.
Good for you, Ford.
They are clearly the only company that understands what you trade when you take money from the bottomless-pit aka the US Government.
Like it or not, the CEO of GM and Chrysler is none other than Barack H Obama – politician and community organizer extraordinaire. He knows nothing about cars, the manufacturing of cars or the selling of cars, but he is the de-facto president of both companies. I’ll bet you didn’t know that you were voting for “hope”, “change” and “automotive executive – with no experience”.
Oh, I know he keeps saying that he has no intention of having the US Government in the auto business, but he did just ask the head of one of the companies to resign. He says that they will remain autonomous and get to make their own decisions – so long as those decisions are approved by the Obama Administration. If that is not running the auto manufacturers, I don’t know what is.
The loans have UNION strings attached. It would not be surprising to see the UAW gain ownership and contriol of GM over this fiasco.
Can Ford sue the government?
If Ford gets screwed because Obama helps GM and/or Chrysler tear up labor and dealer contracts with little or no costs can they sue? The other makers are getting preferential treatment. Is there an “equal protection” that applies to business concerns?
I don’t know – but if I was Ford, I would start working on tweaking the “plan” to further reduce labor and dealer costs and numbers NOW.
Chrysler is DOA
Obama’s naming Fiat as the only viable suitor to save Chrysler probably ruined that deal. Fiat can now hold out for whatever they want. The 30 day clock is ticking and I doubt this is going to help sell cars in the interim. More savvy negotiating from President “Wiley Coyote – Genius”.
